From System to Story: Designing Purple Unity’s system and Brand story

Initially, I was tasked with creating the design for a headless API-first asset data management system. After the launch of the first stable Purple Unity versions, I was charged with creating a brand and marketing website for the startup.

Challenge

Navigated Time Constraints and Complex data Syncing

There were two main challenges: the time constraint and the need to create a sync between the vast portfolio of assets of the fleet owners and the platform.

Solutions

Crafted a solid UX Strategy & branding to Meet project objectives

To meet the goals of the project within the expected deadline, I started the UX research with a competitive analysis of the market and players who are in a similar niche. To understand the scope of the website and the inner supporting platform, I have created a section-based information architecture, which was later implemented and updated. I wanted to secure the success of the main features, so I have created CJM's for the 3 main user flows. When FE was ready, I ran usability benchmarking tests before the launch to validate the ease of use of the platform against the competitors.

about the client

MarineWorks: Meeting the Needs of Maritime Professionals for sustainable future

I worked directly with Friso V. and Björn S. co-founders of MarineWorks — the innovative platform that addresses the need for a quick, reliable, and cost-efficient way to charter workboats. MarineWorks empowers fleet managers to optimize operations while saving on time and fuel. With no hidden fees and a subscription-based model, the platform is tailored to streamline operations and improve profitability in urgent maritime projects.

Project overview

Crafting a scalable Ecosystem for Sustainable Marine Rentals

The team consisted of a TL, PM, 2 front-end devs, 1 back-end and me as a product & branding designer. Our goal was to deliver the website and supporting platform on time so people around the world can use sustainable marine equipment chartering without the need to produce new ones and add to the pollution of the world.

Process

From Competitive Research to Brand Identity: A Structured Approach

As the time didn't allow for the waterfall, I opted to go Agile UX with fast iteration cycles. To kick off the project, after the stakeholder interview, I conducted a competitive research with a focus on understanding the existing market state and proposed solutions for renting nautical equipment. I created an IA to understand the scope of the website & platform and put up sections for every page. To create a consistent user experience, I opted for CJM for 3 main flows— onboarding, purchasing and adding an asset. After I created a detailed styleguide which expanded on brand colors, typography, visual identity and messaging. I worked on branding by creating a mind-map, writing principles, updating the logo and creating supporting imagery. I have also written the majority of the content for the website. After the implementation, I ran usability benchmarking tests to validate the user flows are solid and perform better against the competitors.

Implementation

Minimalism Meets Function: Implementing MarineWorks's Design Solutions

I have started designing the website and the platform with creating a neutral palette and an accent color. I created components for the sections that are repeated more than twice. Moving from section to section and following the customer journey map, I was able to design the functionality for the main flows. I also created empty states, error and success messages and edge cases. For the brand visual direction, client request was to go minimalistic, so I opted for photography and minimalistic illustrations. I also was charged to create images for 60+ supported regions globally as well as continents.

Final designs

Conclusion

Creating impact through design for a global cause

The project was launched within the agreed-upon timeline, and we managed to iterate and test the core functionality with high satisfactory results. The project caught the attention of the Dutch government, and we are hoping to reduce the global pollution partially caused by the excess development of nautical equipment, which instead can be chartered between asset owners and businesses all around the globe.
